We are a small family based poultry business specialising in hatching eggs, day old chicks and point of lay chickens.
Hatching your own fertile eggs is fun, relatively easy and very rewarding. For this you shall need an incubator, some fertile eggs, a thermometer and a small dish of water or damp sponge for maintaining a humid environment. The ideal temperature is 37.5 degrees C with a humidity of 50-60% for the first 18 days then raising humidity to 65-70% for the remaining days. Hatching yours eggs shall take around 21-25days maximum. The first 18 days require the eggs to be turned so the embryo can develop evenly. Turning should ideally be done as many times as possible and done an odd amount of times i.e. 3,5,7,9. This ensures the developing chick sleeps on alternating sides and also helps with a more successful development. After 18 days the eggs no longer need to be turned and the incubator lid should not be removed untill ideally the 21st day. This makes sure the enviroment is at its best humidity for hatching potential. You must make sure the dish containing water has sufficient water to last the hatching period and can lift the incubator lid if this needs topping up. The eggs after the 18th day are more susceptible to problems if the humidity is low as the chick can dry out inside the shell and is unable to move inside the shell in order to peck its way out. Chicks can survive for 24-48hours in the incubator without the need for food or water. After this point they are given specially medicated chick crumb to aid healthy growth and keep their immune system in top shape. For the first 2 months of a chicks life they should only be fed chick crumb and water although you can add a little garlic and sugar to their water every so often to help with immunity and boost energy/growth. After this 2 month period they are put on a diet of growers pellets and a small amount of grit can be added to their diet. At around 4-6months old they are put on layers pellets and should be laying lovely fresh eggs around 6-8months old.
We offer hatching eggs and incubators if you wish to have a go at hatching your own eggs. Alternatively you can purchase day old chicks or point of lay.
